Mission Community Hospital first to perform Robotic Assisted Gastric Bypass in Los Angeles County

Mission Community Hospital’s Dr. Sergey Lyass Uses da Vinci® Robotic System to Become First to Perform Newest Type of Surgical Weight Loss Intervention in the Region

PANORAMA CITY, CA (October 26, 2012) – Mission Community Hospital celebrated another milestone recently when it became the first facility in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties to perform robotic-assisted gastric bypass, a minimally invasive weight loss procedure utilizing the revolutionary da Vinci® Surgical System.

The bypass procedure was performed by Dr. Sergey Lyass, a leading bariatric surgeon at Mission Community Hospital, with assistance from Dr. UthaiahKokkalera. Both are general surgeons at the hospital who specialize in minimally invasive weight loss surgery.

Gastric bypass surgery is designed to help obese individuals lose weight by reducing the size of the stomach. It can be performed through a single large incision, or laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgeries involve several small incisions, just large enough for the instruments to pass through. This method usually results in fewer complications, shorter recovery times, less post-operative pain and a quicker return to normal activities than the single-incision method.

The da Vinci® Surgical System provides the surgeon a better view and better precision than standard laparoscopic surgery and has been shown to reduce post-operative pain, shorten recovery time, and result in fewer complications.

“This accomplishment is a direct result of our proactive attempts to provide our community with the newest and most effective forms of technology and treatment,” said Jack Lahidjani, president of Mission Community Hospital. “We are very proud of our surgeons’ achievements and look forward to providing the same quality of care and innovation which our community has learned to expect of us.”
